A Charter was first issued to the Hillsboro Ruritan Club for formation of Boy Scout Troop 961 in the summer of 1992. We currently serve western Loudoun County with a focus on the Bluemont, Round Hill, Hillsboro area but have scouts from Lincoln, Purcellville, and Lovettsville.
Scouter Bob Zottig, formerly associated with Troop 969 in Hamilton, was appointed by the chartered organization to be the founding Scoutmaster of Troop 961.
John Harris was selected as the Troop’s first Assistant Scoutmaster. At the time of the initial charter, the Troop registered eight Scouts and six adults. Almost 16 years after its founding, Troop 961 has over 60 active registered Scouts and more than 40 registered adults.
In June, 1996, Bob Zottig moved from the position of Scoutmaster to become one of the several Assistant Scoutmasters for Troop 961. John Harris assumed the position of Scoutmaster of the Troop and served in that capacity until January, 2000.
John Tew became the Troop’s third Scoutmaster and led the troop until January of 2003.
Xerxes Herrington was the fourth Scoutmaster, retiring in June 2006.
Matt Griffin took his place becoming the troop’s fifth Scoutmaster until his tenure ended in September 2009.
Our sixth, and current, Scoutmaster is Brian McMullen.
